As a young boy, Dad would take my sister and me out for boat rides on Austin Lake where he had a log cabin on the shore. I would sit in the front of the boat and enjoy the wind in my face as he put the throttle down speeding us up to nearly 60 miles an hour.
Our destination was often an ice cream shop on the other side of the Lake located on a canal that joined Austin Lake and West Lake. I remember how dad would park the boat tying it to the dock where we would leave it while getting our favorite flavor of goodness. I’m not sure which was more fun, the boat ride or the ice cream. Either way, it was a special time spent with Dad.
After getting back from our ice cream runs, Dad would often tie his boat to the dock in front of his place where we would spend the afternoon swimming, skipping rocks, and shooting the slingshot he kept around to repel the squirrels that enjoyed nesting in the eaves of his cabin.
Looking back at those times, I feel thankful and fortunate. Even though it wasn’t the whole summer, the time we did have with Dad, was something to hold onto for two kids who didn’t have a lot of time with him. Just like the boat tied to the dock, we felt secure and safe knowing Dad was there.
Often, people search for a safe harbor; a place to secure a line to for safety and protection. They feel tossed about by the waves of life. The insecurities caused by a lack of direction, or finances, in their life. The stresses that come when least expected. And, their own lack of knowing who they are. I can attest to how all those insecurities of life have affected me. So much so, it’s hard to not think of a time when I wasn’t plagued by them. For many reasons, some of you know, I grew up feeling tossed and turned by those waves of life; much of which were out of my control.
It wasn’t until I found faith that I truly found my safe harbor. It wasn’t immediate, however. Over the course of years, because of my faith opening the door to allow God to work in my life & heart, I’ve found that doc to tie my line to. I’ve found my safe harbor.
During one of the most difficult times of my life, I felt as though everything important to me had been taken away, unjustly. I was left with nothing to hold onto; tossed and turned by the largest waves life could throw at me. Yet, in the midst of that storm, because of my faith, I found the will, and the ability, to keep going. Looking back, I know that, if that safe harbor hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t be here today.
Are you needing a safe harbor, a doc to tie to? Are you feeling like life’s waves are tossing you in every direction? Has the water begun to come over the bow of your boat? Do you feel adrift with nowhere to land?
There is a safe harbor, a dock, you can tie your boat to. A source of strength to hold onto with a rock foundation that can’t be moved by those tossing waves. On that dock, you’ll find all the security you need. You’ll find a firm footing to stand on. You’ll find the ability to see clearly the way to go.
That dock, that safe harbor, is Jesus. Just as He did with the disciples, He can calm the seas; the seas of your life. He will guide you through the storm to the other side, where you will find safety and a place to rest. And, like a good father, He may even bless you with unexpected blessings of your favorite flavor…
Never forget that you are not alone. He is always there. He will be there until the end. He wants to help us. We only need to ask and trust. I’ll be praying for you tonight my friend. If you’re like me, you may just need His strength and security today. Remember, we’re in this ‘life boat’ together, and together, we’ll get to the other side…
