Watching the news over the past few weeks can leave one wishing they lived on the other side of the world; or, with the feeling that we’re living in an alternate universe. It seems that every day there’s something being reported that will either make a person shout for joy or kick their television.
It’s as though the news organizations are more sounding boards for their political views than reporting the news. Finding news that hasn’t been twisted, opinionated, or just being reported incorrectly (seemingly by choice) is nearly impossible.
What is a person to do? For me, I tend to check five to ten different sources and then formulate what the reality probably is from there. It never used to be that way. Growing up, it was one of three channels; usually CBS with Walter Chronkite. I’ll never forget his coverage of the moon landings.
I must confess. I am a ‘news junkie’. I even tried to start a news aggregator site at one time miserably failing in the process. Today, nearly every news site is more of an aggregator site not truly reporting the news themselves.
I don’t know about you, but I struggle with the desire to be ‘in the know’ about current events, weather, and history; not so much with sports. It’s something I’m having to discipline myself more with because it truly can be depressing.
I’ve known people who stay away from the news (especially politics) and it seems their lives are much more at peace. They focus on their family, work, and enjoying one day at a time. Sure, they’ll miss out on some important events, but their quality of life will be better for it; and they’ll probably live longer for it too.
Being a news junkie has its benefits. Like being the family weatherman. The Mrs. knows she can just ask me, and I’ll spit out a forecast for the day. Only lately, I’ve pushed back a little by saying, ‘you have an app for that…’ (not a good idea in hindsight).
The kids know me as being the random facts type of guy. I may not always remember the details like I used to, but I’ll know about the major things. Information can be powerful, helpful, and even hurtful if it’s incorrect.
I may never get past the need to ‘be in the know’, but I’ll keep working at it. If you find yourself disgusted by what you see and hear in the news, you’re not alone. It’s time for a good distraction like a long walk outside, a classic movie, or even one of those funny cat videos. In short, it’s time for a ‘News Break’…
At the end of the day, I’m probably not going to change very much that’s taking place around the world. All I can change is the world around me. By doing that, I may affect a positive change in the greater world and, in the process, find more peace in this life by trying…
Wishing you a blessed week my friend!
