Mercy Chefs

Several years ago, I had the chance to help volunteer with a wonderful organization called Mercy Chefs.  It was right after the Wimberly Texas flood that washed away homes and bridges like they were plastic toys.

The flooding happened after a downburst of water in one place upriver that lasted for hours dumping over 15 inches of water all at once.  The rain had no place to go and became a wall of water rushing down the Blanco River.  Afterwards, Mercy Chefs was there to help feed those affected and the first responders.

This weekend’s rain event in the Carolinas is eerily reminiscent of what happened then.  Even though the winds have died down, the rain water is continuing to build up.  All of that water will need to go somewhere; and that’s downstream.   Thousands of people live along the rivers and streams whose lives will be impacted soon.

Mercy Chefs has already deployed to North Carolina and has feet on the ground.  Their primary mission is to feed people.  With volunteer master chefs from around the country, they bring with them mobile kitchens and, with the help of local churches and volunteers, they feed thousands every day.

They play an important role of helping to feed the first responders along with those who are in shelters, who've lost homes, or who are volunteering to help those in need.  In Texas, they were one of the first on the ground when Harvey hit and one of the last to leave.

The head of Mercy Chefs, Gary LeBlanc, felt led by the Lord to establish the organization after being personally affected during Hurricane Katrina.  I’ve had a chance to meet with Gary and worked with his wife while at CBN.  They are real, honest, and loving people with huge hearts.

Tonight, I want to encourage you, if you’re going to send support to help the victims of Hurricane Florence, to consider sending some support Mercy Chef’s way.  You’ll be helping to feed those who are closest to the disaster. And, I know God will bless you for it too…
