Bacon

I don’t think there’s any other smell in this world that entices people more than bacon.  Where we live in McKinney, there’s a restaurant only a few blocks from our home called ‘Sugarbacon’.  They are known for using bacon in nearly everything they serve…   and it’s all Heavenly!

During the morning walk with the Mrs., we can usually smell the bacon within a few hundred feet of the restaurant.  It’s as though a cloud of goodness just settled on our path and we are on the road to the promised land.

The reason it smells so good may be due to the memories I have of Grandma Olcott cooking breakfast for us.  On Sunday mornings, after staying overnight at their home on Saturday nights while growing up, we would awaken to the smell of bacon and eggs that were carefully scrambled in some of the remaining bacon grease to give it that scrumptious flavor I’ll never forget.

The power of that aroma nearly overtakes a person’s rational mind and drives them to the table.  It’s as though our animal instincts kick-in and all we can think about is that bacon; especially men.  Though it’s such an enticement, it isn’t healthy for us and, eaten in large amounts over time, could reduce our lifespan more than we know.

Like bacon, there are many other things in life, if overindulged in, can have negative effects on us.  They too bring out that animal instinct within us consuming our every thought until fulfilled.   I’m sure many of you can name several right off the top of your head, so I won’t list them; we all know what those could be.

What if that enticement has a way into our lives outside of the front door where it can be monitored and controlled?  What if, even though we know it’s wrong, we allow ourselves to indulge ‘on the side’ where no one will know?  The effects will be the same whether we have a full plate for breakfast or sneak it on the side.   Over time, it will, eventually, catch-up to us.

It’s not always easy to distinguish those things we allow in through that side door.  Our nature is to excuse those things we desire the most; even if we know they will be harmful to us.  It’s as though that little child within us comes out and says, ‘But it’s just one…’

How do we keep that side door locked and those enticements out?   The first step is to recognize them for what they are and what they can do to us.  That is a hard one for many of us, me included, because pleasure has a way of making us all a little crazy.

The next step is to move that enticement out of the side yard to the front yard where others will know about it.  Again, not an easy step for many of us.  The embarrassment, the shame, the fear, and the guilt all keep us from doing that.  They don’t call it ‘Guilty Pleasure’ for nothing.

Lastly, we need to put a guard on that door.  Locks can be picked, or opened from within, and windows can be broken.  In all my life, I’ve found only one true way to keep that side door locked from the enticements of life; my faith.

We’ve all failed in keeping that door closed in our lives.  I dare say that some of us gave up a long time ago and hung a sign above saying, ‘Always Open… Come on in”.

For most of us, it may take years to keep that door closed all the time.  But, when we let into that ‘bacon’ again, He will be faithful and just to forgive us and help us close that door once more.  There is no condemnation for those who trust in Him.  He knows our enticements and how hard it can be.  He has promised to help us overcome them and to keep that side door closed and the front door open to His life.

I know I’m speaking in metaphors but trust me when I say that you’re not alone.  He can give us the strength to get past that path of enticement and keep our side door closed too.   Most of all, know that He loves us unconditionally.  Nothing we can do will ever change that.   And that, you can bank on.

Wishing you all a blessed week my friends!

Brad
