Momma

Not everyone is a cat lover, but I know some who are, and those cats are their life.  Mother is one of them and, throughout our childhood and all the way until today, she has had a special cat at home.   She has always preferred the orange, tiger-tabby breed because they’re short haired, smart, and good with kids.

Having been raised around them, cats have kept me company during some difficult times.  One, in particular, was one who must have been sent by the Lord to be with me.

Back in 1995, I had recently been separated and moved into my own apartment.   It was a small studio apartment with no bedroom and a bar for eating.  And, all I had was just one big ugly brown couch and tv.

Occasionally, after getting back to the apartment, I was greeted at the mailbox by a sweet black & white female cat who seemed to take a liking to me.  Since she appeared to be a stray, I knew better than to feed her and not to let her into the apartment or I would have a cat to care for.

On several other occasions, I had also noticed another cat around the apartments.  This cat was a large tomcat tabby with only one eye, who I affectionately named, ‘Old One Eye’.   He seemed to follow the female cat around.

Within a few months, of living in the apartment, and the occasional welcoming home from the female tabby, one of the most difficult times of my life began.  It was a terribly hurtful time.   My friends kept me going at work, but I had no one to come home to.

It was at that time that the female cat began to greet me every day and not leave me alone.  It was as though she knew I needed company.  Feeling like I did, I decided to let her in during the evenings.  I was still reluctant to name her knowing that would be it.

I can remember many times sitting alone on that brown couch, crying.  She would jump up into my lap and just stare at me with loving eyes as though she somehow knew I was grieving.  It was something I’ll never forget, and from that point, she became my cat and friend.

Well, within a few months of her staying with me, I noticed she went into heat.  She was still an indoor-outdoor cat, so I would put her outside because of her condition and she soon became pregnant.  I know it must have been ‘Old One Eye’.

In a few months, it was time for her to have her kittens.  I had fashioned a box for her in the closet, so she could have them inside.  The night she went into labor, I put her in the box.  She wouldn’t let me go anywhere while she had her babies just staring at me and panting.  It was quite a miracle to see her give birth to four adorable little kittens.  From that night forward, she had the name, ‘Momma’…

After a few months, I gave three of those kittens away to families at the park and kept one for my girls which they picked out.  We called her, ‘Tigger’ since she was a tiger tabby.  She looked a lot like ‘Old One Eye’ too…

Momma and Tigger stayed with me for another five years in California and then moved with me to Texas where the Mrs. was able to meet them and be part of her life for a time.  Unfortunately, after a few years in Texas, I had to put Momma down because of a liver infection.  That was a very difficult day having to say goodbye to her because of all the love, and company, she gave to me.  She is still missed today.

So, tonight, here’s to that special pet in our life that made an impact on us.  Who may have been there when we felt all alone.  Who gave love freely and was always happy to see us.  Who brought joy to our hearts and a sense of comfort when we hurt.  Maybe, one day we’ll see them again…

Love always,

Brad
