Connections

The other morning the Mrs. and I took our daily walk downtown before work.  After getting our bottomless cups of coffee inside our local café, Snug on the Square, we sat down at a table by the wall.

Snug has a unique charm about it.  The owner has created many pieces of art using simple things like pencils, cups, and paper which adorn the bare brick walls under streaming lights hung from corner to corner.  The tables, like the one we sat down to (captured in the photo today), are made with art and bottlecaps covered with polyurethane creating a feeling of nostalgia.

Most importantly, for us, are the regulars we visit with who are part of the décor as much as the furniture.  That small-town feel is something we both cherish living here.  It’s become a rare thing these days in the area we live in and something I hope never changes.

As we sat and talked, we covered topics ranging from our kids, to my family health challenges, and decisions around what to do with our vacation that we still haven’t taken.  Sitting with the Mrs. over a cup of coffee before our day begins has truly become the cornerstone of our relationship.  It may not always be at Snug, but, it has become something we both are dedicated to making time for.

Making time.  That’s an interesting thought isn’t it?  Instead of being part of a regular lifestyle, today, we make time for things.  Our lives have become so busy that the important things, like spending quality time together, are something we need to make time for.  Not just with our spouses, but with our kids and our friends.  The key word is quality.  It’s not just to take time for someone.  It’s to make that time count.

So, what is quality time?  If I had to put into words what I see as quality time it would simply be to connect.  To have conversation without distraction.  To feel mutually understood, listened to, and appreciated.  Or, just laughing together can build those needed connections that bind us together.

So many people spend hours together at work, even at home, and rarely connect.  They’re either buried in their monitor, phone, tablet, or drowning out everything around them with their headphones.  It’s no wonder our families are struggling and so many people are feeling loneliness.

To a relationship, connections are like planting a flower in good soil, adding water, and allowing for plenty of sunshine, it will grow into something beautiful.  Take away any, or all, of those three and the flower will gradually wilt and die.  Adding the water of loving acceptance, nourishing with the good soil of generosity, and providing the light of undistracted attention, will cause that relationship to bloom into something beautiful.

Our morning coffee at Snug has taught me a good lesson about connections.  It’s reminded me of the meaning of quality time.  It’s confirmed, once again, God’s blessing in my life to be able to share it with the Mrs., and it's reminded me that no man is an island.

If you’re feeling disconnected today, I want to encourage you to give a friend a call.  Maybe, try reaching out to a stranger at the coffee shop.  It may not be easy, and may even be frightening, but you’ll be glad you did.  Be persistent and don’t give up because, I’ll guarantee, whoever it is that you reach out to, is probably feeling the same way.

Remember today that you’re loved.  You’re valued.  Your life has meaning.  He who knows all is the ultimate connection and He’s longing to spend time with you.  He will always listen.  He will always love.  And, He will always be there.  Like the Bible says about Him, ‘There is a friend that sticks closer than a brother’.   Now, that is a connection worth having …

Love always my friend,

Brad
