Like most folks, Friday night has traditionally been both a date night and movie night. The older we get, the less we actually go to the movies and stay home instead. It’s also a good way to keep within the boundaries of our diet.
Growing up, the selection of movie theatres was limited to a single small, downtown theatre called The Regent. We all remember that place with the 25cent popcorn, 50cent tickets, and 15cent ice-cream bar machine. Boy, those were the days when you could go to the movies for a dollar and still have change left!
It was at The Regent where I saw Star Wars for the first time, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Jaws. It was also known as the Friday night date night place. All the guys wanted to sit in the back of the theatre and, well, you know. The theatre manager was onto them, however, and liked to do the surprise inspections with the flashlight in the middle of the movie.
One of the movies that I have great memories of, was The Love Bug, staring a car named Herby, which came out in, aahhemm… 1968. It was one of those movies my dad took us to for the first time. We wouldn’t see him every week, but when we did, he would take us to a movie or just hang out at his cabin on the lake.
Herby was especially fun to watch because I loved cars back then (still do). Herby had a mind of his own and was the fastest little car of them all even though he was just a little VW. Of course, it was a Disney movie and had multiple sequels which we were sure to go see.
A few years ago, the Mrs. and I were downtown having lunch and walked by the car in the photo today. We met the owner who was selling the perfect replica of Herby. He had loved the movie so much, that he’d spent a great deal of money having it made for his teenage son. Unfortunately, his son didn’t have the same sentimental feelings for the car and asked dad for a Camero instead (poor kid…).
So, tonight, at the end of a productive week of Microsoft analysis spreadsheets and customer service, it’s time for the Mrs. and I to enjoy our Friday night movie night. We’ll be watching The Greatest Showman which the Mrs. has been trying to get me to watch for some time.
A friend of mine recently watched it and was brave enough to post about it on his Facebook. Not to be outdone, I decided to put the ‘Man Card’ in my desk drawer and watch the movie (thank you Redbox) with the Mrs. There yah go.
I’ll leave you all tonight with a clip from The Love Bug below and am wishing you all a fun, and restful weekend ahead…
