Anticipation

Few things in life compare to the emotion of anticipation.  That hopeful expectation of something good coming our way.  Probably one of the times we’ll ever experience it more, is as a child on Christmas eve thinking about what might be waiting for us under the tree.

For most of my early years, Christmas was when we got our toys and made them last as long as possible.  From the time JCPenney and Sears sent their Christmas catalogs in the mail, we were daydreaming of that moment when we could rip open those presents.

The photo today was taken when I was seven or eight years old.  I was euphoric because ‘Santa’ had left me the G.I. Joe Scuba Diver.  I played with that thing in the tub every bath and probably took more baths than usual, just so I could.

Of course, as we grow up, our anticipation of something great changes from toys to the person we’re in love with.  Just the thought that they might look our way, smile, or heaven forbid, laugh at our jokes!

More years go by and it’s the anticipation of our first child, big job we’d been hoping to land, or that first home.  At the stage of life I’m in now, it’s more about looking forward to that call every week with family, those moments spent with the grandkids (like tomorrow when we get to take the Noah to a movie), or finally getting that kitchen renovation done.

We all feel it.  We all can relate to that expectation of something pleasing.  The excitement of what we’d been waiting for.  The experience of something new.  In many ways, anticipation is kin to faith because faith is defined as the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.

It doesn’t have to be anything big either.  It may be the anticipation of that call from a friend when feeling alone.  It could be the anticipation of just getting out of the house once and a while.  Maybe it’s the excitement of seeing a family member we haven’t seen for a long time.  I’m just glad we can experience anticipation.  I can’t imagine life without it, frankly.

Advertisers have known all too well how anticipation works.  They want us to feel it when we see their product on television or in a print add.  They want to create anticipation in us to try something new and ‘better than before’.

A perfect example of that anticipation is a commercial that, if you’re older than 45, you’ll probably remember.   It’s the Heinz Ketchup commercial with two boys talking about how great the ketchup is but, because it’s thicker than other ketchups, it takes longer to come out of the bottle (this was before the days of squirt bottles).  And, naturally, they play the song by Carly Simon entitled, ‘Anticipation’ while the ketchup is poured over an awesome burger...

I don’t know what you may be waiting in anticipation of tonight.  I have some things that I keep tucked away on that shelf for that one day when God does a miracle (or two).  Sometimes, I take that anticipation off the shelf in dismay.  Fortunately, God knows our hearts and minds better than we do.  He seems to have a way of putting that hope back into my heart and I wind up putting it right back on the shelf where I can only wait in great anticipation of what He has promised.  Now that I think of it, maybe I should listen to Carly Simon more often!...

Tonight, I’ll leave you with a clip of that great Heinz commercial and a video of Carly Simon singing her famous song, ‘Anticipation’.  Looking forward to and anticipating a great weekend ahead my friends!

Love always,

Brad
