Ride Like the Wind
Earlier tonight, while at a family get together, I was talking with our grandbaby’s co-grandpa and we stumbled onto the topic of vacations. We reminisced about family who would be able to take three-to-four-week long vacations each year. I don’t know why, but just the thought of taking even a day away from my work leaves me feeling stressed!
Times have changed for sure. The conversation left me with the thought of, ‘I wonder what that would be like?’ Have you ever thought about just getting away from everything by just getting in the car and going?
I have a friend who does just that. He and his wife will jump in the car, pack a small bag for an over-night and just drive. They almost always wind up having a great time and finding places they never thought they would see.
While preparing to write tonight, the song, ‘Ride Like the Wind’ came on Pandora (that would be a Christopher Cross hit song from 1980 for all those who aren’t as senior as me…). Even though I love the musical side of the song, it is a story about a convict who is riding like the wind to get to the border of Mexico to escape justice.
Just a few years prior to his song’s release, the hit movie I will forever remember, came out about a driver (Burt Reynolds), and his buddy with a semi-truck, who had 28 hours to deliver beer from Texas to Florida. The car Burt Reynolds drove would become one of the coolest cars at the time; a Pontiac Trans Am. The photo today is of a Trans Am from that time taken at a car show the Mrs. and I went to several years ago. He truly rode like the wind in that car… Such a classic!
Ironically, I was thinking earlier today, as I was nearly dead from heat stroke after mowing the grass, that it would be great to take a vacation. We all need to take time to get away from everything. The only problem is, when we get back from that ride in the wind, life is still here as it was when we left.
What do we do then? We take a vacation and then end up more tired from the effort, and, life doesn’t change when we get back. I really don’t know the answer to that one. However, I do know that the idea of jumping in the car with the Mrs. and just ‘riding like the wind’ sounds like a great idea!
In fact, I think we’ll do just that this Summer (after I get the ok from the boss/Mrs. of course…You know… ) I may not have a hot Trans Am to ride in, but my Honda Accord will do just fine. I may not be running from the law, but I will be driving away from the stresses of life for a while. I may not have Burt Reynold’s looks, but I have a Sally Field in the seat next to me for sure!!
Today, here’s to looking forward to that ‘ride like the wind’ with the Mrs. I’ll keep you all updated on the progress. Who knows, it may be sooner than I know.
Wishing all of you mothers out there a Very Happy Mother’s Day tomorrow!!
