As I sit here, this clock sits on my shelf above the fireplace in my office/studio. It’s a somewhat common antique clock and ones like it can be found in shops around town. This one is different because it carries with it some great memories of my childhood.
This clock was my grandfather’s clock (pun intended). He loved to collect clocks and restore them. My sister and I would stay the night nearly every Saturday and, without exception, we were shocked awake on the hour by the chiming this clock made. It still runs today, but I can’t let it chime during work hours or my customers will think I office out of the Old Big Ben!
Of late, the Mrs. has not only grown fond of birds, but she’s grown fond of old clocks. She now has a budding collection of them above the fireplace in our living room in fact. I never took her for a clock lady. I guess that’s just another added great surprise she brings to our relationship.
There’s something timeless about them. The ticking sound in the background that settles the mind, the intricate, but simple design, and the history all combine to make the home a little more, ‘homie’. The greatest thing to me will always be the childhood memories of grandpa reaching up above the couch to wind that clock with the clock key in one hand and the other being used to take a few puffs off the old pipe.
He was a simple and quiet man. He never cared to be rich or desired the luxuries of life. He enjoyed taking old pieces of furniture and making them look new as a hobby. He loved the clocks because I believe they also reminded him of good memories growing up in the 1920s.
Most of all, he had a fun sense of humor and loved to make us laugh. That sense of humor, combined with his humility and unwavering love for the family, are what I remember when I see that clock sitting there throughout the day. All something I want to be for my family.
So tonight, here’s to those old clocks that remind us of good times in the past. Here’s to the ones who created those good times in the first place. And, here’s to creating those good memories in the future.
Wishing you a happy Friday and great weekend ahead!
