Behind the Scenes

We often hear the term 'behind the scenes' when people are talking about a movie production or some sort of event that seems to go off without a hitch but, 'behind the scenes', there were were all these things happening to pull off what people saw in the front.  I went out tonight after the rain to downtown MckInney which is now a center of commerce, tourism, and that 'old town charm'.  But what happens where everyone is walking around the square isn't what's happening behind that wall.

Behind that wall are electrical units, air conditioning units, lights, wires, pipes to provide water and sewage disposal, trash bins, storage, and infrastructure support to give access for those important deliveries of food to the restaurants.   It's not pretty.  It's not popular.  It's definitely not a picture of what's going on the cover of the local tourism guide.  BUT, without it, nothing else can happen.

Our culture in America breeds a desire to be in the front of the stage.  To be the one who gets the glory or approval.  Yet, behind the scenes there are so many people who work hours and equipment designed by brilliant people who will never get their names or faces in the light, but without them, it couldn't happen.   When Jesus said, 'the greatest among you will be the least', he meant it.  The jockeying for position by his followers (and their mother) was about all He could take.  The truth, though, was not something, at the time, they wanted to hear.

I've found myself in that very same position years ago. Wanting to be noticed for doing good (not opening but inwardly).  Wanting to do great things by being that one who is called to reach the nations...  Life has a way of bringing us all down to Earth.   My view of greatness today is so much different that 35 years ago.

Today, if I can make a difference in someone's life around me that will last forever, I have done good.  To stop and help with the door, carry someone's groceries, pick up that trash bouncing around in the wind. and on and on.  It all boils down to that old adage.. "Less of me Lord and more of you..".  That's the greatness I seek today.  That's the person I want to become.

May your day be blessed tomorrow and, remember, it's not those who get the attention who are great, but those who love, support, and work 'behind the scenes' to help others.  That is where your reward will be.

Blessings My Friends!

Brad
